Turning Tides is focused on augmenting the conservation efforts among fishing communities in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) of Western Africa. To comprehensively address coastal conservation in the region, we have opted to target coastal livelihoods. Our offerings cover educational resources, analyzing the climate change on marine biodiversity, and dissemination from policy experts as well as local community stakeholders.
The Turning Tides Handbook will cover the significance of marine environmental conservation, their relationship with fishing communities and other ecosystems around them including the beach and mangroves. The goal of this handbook is to signpost the importance of safeguarding Marine Protected Areas and shed light on the vulnerable marine environments through public policy and community initiatives. The Go Fish Fact Sheets will provide important information about Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Senegal in an accessible manner to professional fishing communities. Looking to create awareness through a targeted intervention, they are designed in both English and French.
Further, the Turning Tides Webinar Series will disseminate the knowledge of project Turning Tides among students and young adults. Encouraging conscious, grassroot change will allow for a better future. The goal is to highlight concerns around marine sustainability, the efforts being made by experts to confront these, and discussions around how the local communities may contribute to the conservation work. An online fundraising campaign will support local fishing communities in the procurement of the equipment required for sustainable fishing. All proceeds from the fundraiser will be donated to partner NGOs.
